Responding to the client’s request to renovate an old, rustic hotel into a first-class resort, the designer developed a strong design concept of striking geometric motifs, colors, and materials that mirror the beauty of the California coastline around the Carmel area. The color palette, drawn from the surrounding natural site and views, consists of dark greens, beiges and taupes, aqua blues and the red purple of the native ice plant. Colors are used sparingly to focus the viewer’s attention toward the sea.
